CARLTON, VICTORIA – Liam Jones has walked away from up to half a million dollars in his 2022 contract after refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19, leaving the AFL community stunned. ‘The Blues’ released a media statement today confirming Jones’s retirement, without referencing his vaccination status.
It was reported last week that the 30-year-old, who had been contracted for the 2022 AFL season, had opted against receiving the jab as required before the club’s pre-season training commences later this month.
Jones said in a statement released today:
“I wish to announce my retirement from AFL football effective immediately.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported me throughout my journey, both personally and professionally. I love the game and I’ll miss my teammates.
I hope that people respect my decision and privacy – neither myself or my management team will be making any further comment on the matter.”
The AFL last month announced a no jab, no play mandate for the men’s and women’s leagues. The policy says players and staff in Victoria must be fully vaccinated by November 26th, by December 17th in New South Wales and February 18th in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.
Jones played 161 AFL games for the Blues and the Bulldogs.
