While organized medicine completely disagrees, Florida’s Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, at the end of last week went on the record with very strong language concerning COVID-19 vaccine safety, or the lack thereof. In a recent press release sharing the news about a deal with the Special Olympics to lift the vaccine mandate, Dr. Ladapo actually committed professional heresy in today’s professional environment, raising doubts about the COVID-19 vaccine safety profile and suggesting they may not be safe to use.
Jacob Ogles, writing for Florida Politics, reported on the matter, noting that the Surgeon General made such claims with “anecdotal evidence” at best when he suggested that the COVID-19 vaccines generate more side effects than other vaccines.
Dr. Ladapo declared, “People will say oh, you know, millions of people have taken these vaccines, they must be safe.” He continued, “Well, you can’t know the answer to that when it is taboo to talk about having a reaction to vaccines.”
On the flu vaccine, Ladapo emphasized: “There’s another vaccine that over 100 million Americans take every year, and it’s the influenza vaccine,” he said. “And the stream of adverse events that I’ve heard from people all over this country after these vaccines is nothing like the years of my life when I’ve been in medicine and have been administering the influenza vaccines. There is a difference, and you can’t say that millions of people getting it excuses you from that.”
Do Mandates Make Sense?
Declaring mandates don’t make sense for a vaccine that doesn’t stop viral transmission, Ladapo now is in the same camp, believe it or not, as Bill Gates, who also recently at Davos pointed out there really isn’t much point to checking in on people and making sure they have been vaccinated when this won’t stop transmission. TrialSite reported on Gates’ comments here.
“Scientifically, it makes zero sense,” Ladapo said. “How can you force people to take a vaccine in order to stop transmission when that vaccine is not effective at stopping transmission.”
Benefits
But the benefits associated with the vaccine do come with some risks. Data collected from public health authorities around the world indicate vaccines have reduced serious illness and death counts, for example. Although there are some countries where TrialSite reports an uptick, or even record deaths from COVID-19 in heavily vaccinated populations (e.g. Australia), health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledge that the vaccines don’t completely stop transmission but still offer benefits.
Ogles points to a statement from the CDC, stating, “Data show fully vaccinated persons are less likely than unvaccinated persons to acquire SARS-CoV-2, and infections with the delta variant in fully vaccinated persons are associated with less severe clinical outcomes .”
And the viral transmission may not be as bad as one study from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, revealing that those persons that were fully vaccinated were 63% to 73% less likely to spread the pathogen.
Yet TrialSite tracks nation after nation with a near-universally fully vaccinated adult population that faces record infectious surges and, in the case of Australia, for example, record deaths. Although adults are over 90% vaccinated Down Under, more than double the number of persons died in the first three months of 2022 than all of 2020 and 2021. Nearly all of these deaths involved vaccinated people. TrialSite is the only media consistently reporting on this sort of bad news. Could Ladapo be correct that it’s taboo to discuss any problems with the COVID-19 vaccines? That’s a real problem, if so; science depends on open debate, even argument.
TrialSite recently discussed the topic of herd immunity—remember that topic? The vaccines were to help societies attain that vital status to transcend the pathogen. Yet many critics, including this media, questioned the eradication of the pathogen with a mass vaccination paradigm from near the start. It didn’t make sense given the highly transmissible nature of the pathogen. The fact that it has already evolved elaborately indicated it would evolve further, making it more difficult for mass vaccination in one mass surge.
TrialSite tracks medical research and associated trends around the world and now picks up on growing concern about COVID-19 vaccine safety. It’s becoming a topic that is less taboo each month that passes.
